Keep your jewelry beautiful for as long as possible. Tips for maintaining your gold and silver jewelry.
A piece of jewelry is only truly sustainable if you continue to maintain it properly.
Precious metals, gemstones and pearls are beautiful materials from nature. They are strong, but not inviolable.
Their unique properties also need attention and care.
To polish
Give your gold and silver jewelry a regular cleaning with an old toothbrush and warm water and mild soap. Dirt from your skin can build up in jewelry and cause it to lose its shine. Even if your jewelry is set with gemstones, you can check whether your stones are still properly attached to the metal. Dirt in the setting of the stone can give you the incorrect idea that the stone is properly set. You will be amazed at the shine that the stone can regain after cleaning!
Gold maintained
Gold is a lot stronger than silver. It is not without reason that people often choose (white) gold wedding rings. Of course, they should last the entire marriage and preferably longer. The shine usually lasts longer and is less likely to be scratched. However, you should also take good care of gold jewelry.
To ensure that your gold jewelry lasts longer, you can do the following:
-Remove your gold jewelry while exercising, swimming, showering, sleeping, cleaning and heavy work such as gardening, DIY and heavy lifting.
-If your gold jewelry is less shiny, you can usually solve this by polishing the jewelry again with a toothbrush, some warm water and soap. This can also be done with a special gold polishing cloth.
Silver maintained
A natural phenomenon of silver is oxidation. This is the blackening of the surface and is caused by sulfur in the air or the acidity of your skin. For some people, silver quickly turns black on the skin, for others it does not. This has nothing to do with the quality of the silver.
Some jewelry in my collection is deliberately blackened for aesthetic reasons. It is better NOT to polish this jewelry. The black can therefore disappear completely. I will be happy to freshen them up for you free of charge without losing their original color.
To ensure that your silver jewelry does not turn black or wear out as quickly, you can do the following:
-Remove your jewelry while sleeping, exercising, swimming, showering, cleaning, or when working with strong chemicals.
-First put on your make-up, body spray, hair spray, perfume, skin cream, etc. and only when it is dry, put on your jewelry.
-Don't go out in the sun for too long with silver jewelry.
-When you are not wearing jewelry, store it in a lockable box or jewelry box.
If your jewelry does oxidize, which is almost inevitable, do the following:
-Polish it lightly with a special silver polishing cloth. Do not use silver cleaning fluids such as Silvo on this. This can accumulate in your jewelry and is not always safe for pearls. If this is not sufficient, please contact me. I have special resources to make your jewelry shine again.
-Silver is a metal that scratches and tarnishes quickly. When doing the dishes, heavy chores, gardening, exercising, etc., it is better to remove silver jewelry. This means they wear out less quickly and are less likely to develop ugly scratches or other spots
Gemstones and pearls
Every gemstone or pearl has its own aversion to certain circumstances.
Below are a number of tips to keep your stones or pearls beautiful for as long as possible.
-Some stones can discolour if they are exposed to bright sunlight for too long. Rose quartz, amethyst and citrine are some well-known gemstones that can fade in the bright sun. So it is better to store them in the dark and do not wear them if you are going to sunbathe extensively.
-Some gemstones and most pearls cannot withstand impact, soap, cosmetics and other chemicals. Wear and tear on most pearls and gemstones is inevitable over time and in many cases you can continue to wear your jewelry. However, a break due to impact can cause the stone or pearl to fall out of the jewelry.
-Make sure you don't wear pearls on heavily perfumed skin. Spraying perfume directly onto pearls can seriously damage the pearls. Pearls are also very sensitive to wear and tear.
-If you want to clean your jewelry with gemstones or pearls, find out what you can and cannot use with your stone or pearl. Usually a little warm water is sufficient. Please feel free to contact me for advice.
-Finally, also pay close attention to the setting with which the pearl or gemstone is attached to the jewelry. This can wear out over time and cause the stones to become loose and fall out.
